6 Elderly Care Tips to Follow During Monsoon

The monsoon season is around the corner and while rain is a welcoming change for many of us, it is not always so for the elderly. The rains bring with them their own series of challenges, such as viral infections and health problems that compromise their immunity. The current pandemic situation certainly doesn’t help matters. On clear, dry days, mobility can be a challenge, but the rains make leaving the house a real task!

As a result, elderly care during the monsoon becomes critical. Infected senior citizens suffer immensely and, in the worst-case scenario, succumb to these diseases. These issues are exacerbated by a weakening immune system and the body's diminishing ability to heal from fatigue. For the elderly, the rainy season may be a difficult period because they may be unable to go out to maintain their everyday schedule.

Therefore, we have a list of elderly care tips that caregivers must follow during the rainy days so that their elderly loved ones are well taken care of. Take a look!

1. Hydration with Warm Water

Water is one of the simplest things that tend to get contaminated during the rainy season. As a result, we see a lot of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid during the monsoon season. Therefore, it is preferable to drink warm water and to use warm water for bathing to keep the elderly healthy.

2. Avoid Street Food and Eating Out

The monsoon season is one that tempts you to try some street food. During the rainy season, though, senior citizens should avoid street food or eat out. If you have any elders at home, this is just one of the monsoon treatment rituals that you should observe.

3. Enhance Immunity

It's a good idea to increase senior citizens' immunity before the monsoon season begins. Cough and cold are typical ailments that wreak havoc on the immune system of the elderly. Ensure that they consume nuts, peanuts, barley, and rice. These foods contribute to a significant increase in their immunity. To raise their immunity, senior citizens should also consider adding herbs and spices to their diet. Garlic, turmeric, holy basil, cinnamon, ginger, and other anti-inflammatory ingredients that provide vital nutrients and antioxidants are highly beneficial to general health and wellness.

4. Consume a Nutritious Diet

Senior citizens' digestive capability is said to be at an all-time low during the monsoon season. It's important to have fruits, vegetables, green leafy vegetables, and some other fibre-rich foods in your diet during these periods. Fruits like pears, bananas, and apples can help with digestion.

5. Exercise and Meditation

Walking, yoga and exercise are important for senior citizens. If it has rained outside and they are unable to exercise outdoors, they can do meditation and yoga for at least 30 minutes per day indoors. Exercising aids digestion and keeps the mind stress-free when sweating off excess moisture and potentially dangerous bacteria.

6. Maintain Cleanliness

In the rainy season, personal hygiene and cleanliness of the surroundings are important. Microorganisms can be found in the water in plant pots and water tanks. As an integral aspect of elderly care, caregivers must ensure that the surroundings where they live are dry and safe until the monsoon season begins. If they have been out in the rain and have been drenched, they must soak in warm water to avoid infection.
